Swimming pool regulations
Safety rules
It is important to know the existing regulations as well as some prevention advice, in order to limit the risk of accident or drowning in swimming pools.
Private swimming pools for individual or collective use must be equipped with a safety device to prevent the risk of drowning, especially of young children. The device must meet certain standards. Failure to comply will result in a fine. Swimming pools placed on the ground, inflatable or removable are not affected.
If you are the owner of a private swimming pool for individual or collective use (family swimming pool or swimming pool reserved for residents, hotel swimming pool, camping, rural lodging...) whose basin is totally or partially buried, you must install at least one of the following equipment:
- protective barrier
- Audible alarm system (immersion alarm informing of the fall of a child in the water or perimeter alarm informing of the approach of a child from the pool)
- Safety cover (tarpaulin)
- Veranda-type shelter that completely covers the pool Pools placed on the ground, inflatable or removable are not affected by this obligation.
It is recommended to install your protective barrier about 1 meter away from your pool.
Swimming pool maintenance
Since January 1, 2022, the new regulatory framework for swimming pools imposes an obligation of means and results in terms of the health safety of installations.
The manager must respect and enforce the following principles in order to effectively prevent health risks in swimming pools:
Daily monitoring or self-monitoring of swimming pool water quality:
The operator must check the quality of his water at least once a day (minimum check frequency which varies according to the installations). This self-monitoring makes it possible to check the proper functioning of the installations and to put in place corrective measures to improve the quality of the water.
To help you in this work, ARS Occitanie offers tutorials on carrying out self-checks. A brochure to help you control the quality of water in a swimming pool, a model health record and an abacus are available for download (Model of health record; 25°C abacus).
Water control for cottages and guest rooms less than 15 people : considered as a type D establishment, your obligation is to check the water at least twice a year by a COFRAC-certified laboratory, as well as daily monitoring of the water...
