Léon Gambetta, national defense hero and one of the founders of the Third Republic, was born on April 2, 1838 in Cahors and died accidentally in 1882.
The bronze monument was erected in 1883 and inaugurated on April 14, 1884.
This statue in his likeness has been amputated from a certain number of characters who surrounded the politician. Gambetta is originally leaning on a cannon, urging the French to fight, in the right hand holds a map and points to the border in the left. A large flag and a shield marked RF are thrown forward. A marine rifleman lies in wait on the left, a wounded soldier falls on the right.
